This page provides information on the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS). The FCC has approved MURS and on November 13th, 2000 it became effective. MURS falls under the FCC Wireless Telecommunications Bureau's Personal Radio Services, whose regulations are described in Part 95 of the FCC Rules and Regulations.

Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)--a private, two-way, short-distance voice, data or image communications service for personal or business activities of the general public.
The MURS transmit/receive frequencies are: 151.820 MHz 151.880 MHz 151.940 MHz 154.570 MHz 154.600 MHz
Maximum Effective Radiated Power (ERP) is 2 watts!
The authorized bandwidth on 151.820 MHz, 151.880 MHz and 151.940 MHz is 11.25 kHz.
The authorized bandwidth on 154.570 and 154.600 kHz is 12.5 kHz.
Privileges on MURS (VHF) frequencies are similar to... but NOT the same as the family radio service (FRS) on UHF frequencies:
With MURS;
1) You can transmit data (Packet, PSK31..etc) and imagery (SSTV ..Etc)!
2) You can connect it to an external (outside) antenna.
3) OH...BTW... NO license is required!
4) Because the 2W power is expressed as an "effective radiated power" (ERP) limit, the operator may use an outside antenna, however, the antenna cannot be a gain type device.
''I can see it now; A 1000 foot tower, with a unity-gain antenna at the top.... but you better file an FAA-form 1260 (revised) with the FAA, and get approval from the local airport...''
Here's a great way for the ''non-HAM'' APRS operators to build a low-powered APRS Packet Radio, wireless communications network, using MURS.
Here is a MURS transceiver interface to a Packet Radio TNC interface diagram.
