BUX COMM Mobile Antenna Tuning Instructions; www. BUX COMM.com Setting the SWR: Insert your VHF or UHF antenna whip into the antenna ferrule or the adjustable slip at the top of the coil. Using a good SWR meter, calibrate (set it up in the forward power position) it near the center of the band the antenna is designed for. Switch back to SWR and record the readings. These readings are made on three frequencies; one at the center of the band, then at the lower end of the band, and at the upper end of the band.
If the lowest SWR reading occurs at the low end of the band, the antenna whip/tip is to long and must be shortened. Loosen the whip/tip set screws and lower the whip 1/4'' into the loading coil, or mast. Tighten the set screw(s) and again read SWR. Repeat until lowest SWR is obtained. If the whip is fully lowered into mast and the SWR is still high, remove the whip from mast. Using a grinder, bolt cutters, or hacksaw remove or cut inch from the bottom part of the whip. Insert the whip back into the ferrule and again test the SWR. Repeat the above procedure until the SWR is below 1.5:1 for the frequencies covered by the antenna. If the lowest SWR reading occurs at the high end of the band, the antenna whip is to short and must be raised (lengthened). Loosen the mast set screws and raise the whip inch, tighten set screws and test the SWR again. Repeat the above procedure until the VSWR is below 1.5 of all frequencies within the band you plan to operate.
How low can we go? Or how low can the SWR be set? In a perfect world we would get the VSWR below 1.1:1, but in a practical installation, a 1.5:1 is considered ideal. Some installations will not achieve a 1.1:1 VSWR because of conditions associated with environment or coaxial cable properties. The losses associated with a 1.5:1 (using approximately 14 feet of coax) is actually less than one-half of one percent (1/2 of 1%) of your output power, which on a normal 5 watt radio means a loss of .025 watts of power. In other words, instead of transmitting 5 watts output, you are actually transmitting only 4.975 watts. For that reason, spending the extra time to get below 1.5:1 is a matter of personal preference, particularly if you have a high gain type antenna.
What happens if your SWR is 2.0:1 instead of 1.5:1 or less? Most transceivers in use today have VSWR (viswar) protection circuits that decreases power output when the VSWR goes above 2.0:1. Thus reducing the power out of the final power amplifier. So generally, anything between 1.5:1 and 2.0:1 is acceptable, and useable for solid, and reliable communications. VSWR readings of 3.0:1 or higher, usually point toward other problems in the system. |

Dipole and inverted-Vee
antennas are commonly "balanced" at the feed points. Coaxial feed
lines are "unbalanced" by design personality (thus the name BALUN).
This BALANCED, to UNBALANCE marriage can only be performed by using a
BALUN. A BALUN should always be used when feeding wire antennas with
coax to make certain characteristic antenna performance and optimum
transfer of RF energy to the antenna complete.
When coax is used to feed antennas without the benefit of a BALUN, current flows on the shield of the coaxial feed line . This coaxial shield current can produce a "Hot HAM shack," This can result in nasty R.F. injury from the microphone to lips, hand key to fingers, etc., and is often more pronounced at certain frequencies. Coax cable shield currents can also cause damage to your HAM gear. TVI, RFI, telephone and even wild VSWR indications can result from these shield currents. In 85% of antenna projects that displayed these problems, when a BALUN is added to the coaxial line or near the antenna feed point, these problems were diminished or completely eliminated. |
|||
At BUX COMM, *We don't cut corners! The components used in the manufacture of our BALUNs are from top quality components, beginning with the Silver Plate SO239 connectors and center insulator is made of teflon(E.I Dupont). The wire we wind the ferrite donut with, is heavy-duty, silver flashed wire, with teflon insulation, which will handle RF voltages above 5000 volts, and temperatures above 2000 degrees. The binding posts are heavy-duty, tempered brass, with end holes and side-thru holes to accommodate either type loop-thru connection. A double-shoulder brass capture nut is used to add a secure bite and improve electrical connections to the wire . |

BUX BALUNs should be installed at the antenna feed point, or where the coax or feed-line attaches to the above ground antenna. BUX BALUNs are used to connect balanced antennas to unbalanced transmission lines, such as coax cable. Their primary purpose is to prevent antenna (RF) currents from flowing down the outside of the cable. Another function of the BUX BALUN41 is to match the impedance of an unbalanced coax to the balanced feed point of a balanced input antenna(s). BUX BALUNS may also be used as line isolators anywhere along the cable to prevent the destructive influence of induced RF currents (VSWR).
BUX 4:1 BALUNs are voltage BALUNs. They consist of a large "Type 43" material. BUX BALUN41 operate from 1.8 to 30 MHz MHz and allow use of RF power to the rated capacity of the BALUN.

Given that the impedance of most commonly available coax is either 50 or 72 ohms and since many wire antennas present an impedance of 200 to 600 ohms or more at the feed point, direct connection of the coax to wire antennas hits us with a significant signal loss due to the antenna impedance mismatch.
Having realized this set of circumstances in the receiver and SWL arena,
we're introducing a new approach to defeat the noise and impedance
mismatch problems in our receive antennas by designing this new RxBALUN

TUNING INSTRUCTIONS: CAUTION: If required, cut off the bottom of the whip to ensure it does not extend down into the coil of the antenna. Failure to observe this precaution will cause heat damage and void any warranty. At resonance, VSWR should be 1.5:1 or less when properly matched. When tuning is complete, tighten set screws securely. NOTE: Bandwidth and VSWR will vary due to mounting location. If your installation has a VSWR over 1.5:1 at resonance, or you need to operate over a greater bandwidth a tuner may be required. |
